Fishing is essential for life on Mafia Island. Every morning, the boats that lay on the beach during the low tide are lifted by the morning rush of water, and fisherman leave for a day of fishing. Much of the fish is either caught for subsistence or taken to Dar es Salaam to sell. In order to seal these boats from the harsh salt water, coconut oil is lathered on the boats and heated to create a waterproof seal.
